Using High Pressure to Reveal Quantum Criticality in an Elemental Antiferromagnet

Investigating the interplay of electronic and magnetic properties at high pressure requires demanding diffraction measurements on single crystals in the diamond anvil cell. Using sample preparation techniques and diffraction methods developed in preliminary studies at HPCAT, postdoctoral fellow Rafael Jaramillo of The University of Chicago has observed unusual quantum phase transition behavior in elemental chromium at 10 GPa.
